Making the Most of a Day at Fort Langley

Fort Langley sits on the south bank of the Fraser River, and the river is the key to understanding why the post mattered. The Hudson's Bay Company first built a fort here in 1827, and the post was later moved a few kilometres upstream to its current location. Beyond furs, the fort became an important centre for salmon salting, farming and trade with Indigenous peoples, including the Stó:lō communities whose presence along the river long predates the fort. In 1858 the Colony of British Columbia was proclaimed here, which is why the village often calls itself the birthplace of British Columbia.

What to look for inside the palisade

The site is run by Parks Canada and combines reconstructed buildings with one original structure, the storehouse, which is among the oldest surviving buildings in the province. Expect costumed interpreters, hands-on demonstrations such as blacksmithing or barrel making, and exhibits on the trading post and early colonial life. Programming changes through the year, so check the official Parks Canada page for current hours, admission and special events before you go.

Practical tips

• Give it time: two to three hours lets you see the buildings and talk with interpreters without rushing.
• Dress for the weather: much of the visit is outdoors on gravel paths, and Fraser Valley rain is common outside summer.
• Explore the village: the streets of Fort Langley next to the site are good for a walk, with heritage buildings, cafés and a riverside trail.
• Plan transport: most visitors drive, and parking can fill on busy weekends, so arriving early helps.
