Getting the Most from Your Growler

A growler is only as good as the care it gets between fills. Craft beer is a fresh product, and a few simple habits make a real difference to how your take-home pint tastes once you pour it at home.

Keep it clean

Rinse your growler with hot water as soon as it is empty, then let it dry upside down with the cap off. Leftover beer left sitting inside can turn sour or grow mould, and soap residue can flatten carbonation and leave off-flavours. Skip scented detergents. A bottle brush helps for stubborn spots. Bringing a clean growler back to the taproom makes refills quicker and keeps the beer tasting as the brewers intended.

Keep it cold and dark

Once filled, a growler should go straight into the fridge. Warmth and light are the quickest ways to dull hop aroma and stale a beer. If you are heading home along the Fraser Valley highways on a warm day, a cooler bag is worth packing.

Drink it soon

Unopened, a well-sealed growler generally holds up for a few days to about a week. After opening, the carbonation starts to fade, so plan to finish it within a day or two. That makes growlers ideal for a backyard barbecue, a dinner party or a weekend gathering rather than long-term storage. Hoppy styles like IPAs are best enjoyed quickly, while darker or maltier beers tend to be a little more forgiving.
